Does Hulu work in Japan?
No, with a twist that catches people. Your US Hulu subscription is geo-locked to the United States and refuses from any Japanese network. Hulu Japan exists, with the same logo, but it's a separate company (owned by Nippon TV) with its own catalog and accounts; your US login does nothing there. Peacock is US-only too, and Max has no Japan service. Downloads made at home play offline. Streaming needs a US IP the services trust, which shared VPN ranges aren't.
What actually happens
Open the Hulu app in Tokyo and it tells you the service isn't available in your location. Search the App Store and you'll find Hulu, download it, and land in Hulu Japan: Japanese interface, Japanese catalog, Japanese sign-up requiring a Japanese payment method. The two Hulus share a brand and nothing else, a leftover of a 2014 sale. Peacock behaves like US Hulu: American soil only. Max, which has expanded to much of the world, hasn't reached Japan, where HBO content is licensed to U-NEXT instead.
Nothing about this is Japanese censorship. It's the services' own geo-checks, the same ones that would stop you in Paris, plus one confusing trademark.
What works without any of that
- Downloads. Hulu, Max, and Peacock all allow offline downloads on paid tiers; fill the tablet on home wifi and it plays anywhere.
- Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV+, Disney+ all work in Japan, Netflix and Disney+ with the local libraries (Netflix in Japan is its own story).
- Hulu Japan or U-NEXT for a month, if you're staying long and curious; U-NEXT carries HBO.
