Does Threads work in China?

travelersvpn.com guides

No. Threads has been blocked in mainland China since the day it launched in 2023, inheriting the ban that covers every Meta product: Facebook since 2009, Instagram since 2014, WhatsApp since 2017. The feed never refreshes and posts hang on any mainland network, including your hotel's wifi. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN or a roaming eSIM, set up before you arrive.

What actually happens when you try

Threads never had a single working day in mainland China. It launched already inside Meta's standing ban, so there was no dramatic cutoff, just the familiar behavior: cached posts from the flight over, then a feed that refreshes into nothing, replies that spin, and a compose button that posts into the void. Because Threads shares Instagram's login plumbing, and Instagram is blocked, even re-authenticating from inside China fails.

Curiously, Threads found an audience anyway among Chinese-speaking users, mostly in Taiwan and among mainlanders on VPNs, so your feed may be livelier in Chinese than your timeline at home. All of it flows over tunnels.

What still works without a VPN

How to keep posting: two real options

Option 1: a VPN, installed before you fly. Through a working VPN, Threads behaves normally, and since it rides Instagram's account system, one tunnel fixes both apps at once. Traveler's VPN gives you a private server with an IP address only you use, and routes the whole Meta family, Threads, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, through the tunnel while WeChat, Didi, and local maps stay direct.

Option 2: a travel eSIM. Roaming data exits through Hong Kong or Singapore, so Threads works on cellular with no VPN, at roughly $4/day, and stops the moment you join hotel wifi. Most travelers run both.

Install everything before you board: Threads, like the rest of Meta's apps, is absent from the mainland App Store, and reaching foreign app stores from inside is blocked too.

Frequently asked

Does Threads work in Hong Kong or Macau?

Yes, normally, with no VPN. The Great Firewall applies to mainland China only. It also works normally in Taiwan, where Threads is notably popular.

Was Threads ever available in China?

No. It launched in 2023 already covered by the ban on Meta services and has never been reachable from mainland networks without a VPN.

Does fixing Instagram with a VPN fix Threads too?

Yes. They share account infrastructure, and a VPN that restores one restores both. Log into both before you fly so no fresh verification is needed from inside.

Will Threads work on my hotel's wifi in China?

No. All mainland networks are filtered, including hotel, cafe, and airport wifi. A VPN works on wifi; a roaming eSIM only helps on cellular.

All of Meta through one tunnel. WeChat stays fast.

Traveler's VPN routes per destination on a private server nobody shares. Free 3-day trial, $9.99 for a 7-day trip, no account to make. Install it before you fly.
