Does Discord work in China?
No. Discord has been blocked in mainland China since July 2018. The app sits on the connecting screen, servers never load, and voice channels never join, on any mainland network including your hotel's wifi. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN or a roaming eSIM, set up before you arrive.
What actually happens when you try
Discord shows its "Connecting" screen with the cycling loading messages and never gets past it. If it cached your server list, the channels are there but every message history is blank and nothing sends. Voice channels are worse: they join, show you connected, and pass no audio in either direction. The Great Firewall drops Discord's traffic silently, so there's no error explaining any of this.
This matters beyond gaming. Discord is where a lot of study groups, crypto communities, open-source projects, and remote teams live, and all of that goes dark on landing. Many games themselves still connect to their own servers; it's the Discord layer on top that dies.
What still works without a VPN
- iMessage and FaceTime, including group FaceTime, because Apple operates in China.
- WeChat group chats and voice calls, which is what Chinese gamers use.
- Steam and most game servers, which are usually reachable, if slow. Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are patchy.
How to make Discord work: two real options
Option 1: a VPN, installed before you fly. Text channels work through any decent VPN. Voice is the demanding part: it wants low latency and a connection that doesn't hiccup, and crowded shared VPN servers give you robot voice and dropouts.
