Does Telegram work in China?
No. Telegram has been blocked in mainland China since 2015. Messages hang on the clock icon, channels never refresh, and calls fail on any mainland network, including your hotel's wifi. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN or a roaming eSIM, set up before you arrive.
What actually happens when you try
Telegram shows "Connecting..." in the title bar and stays there. Cached chats are readable, but new messages never send, media never downloads, and the channels you follow freeze at whatever post they were on when you landed. No error, no explanation. The Great Firewall has dropped Telegram's traffic since 2015, longer than it has blocked WhatsApp.
Telegram has a huge Chinese-speaking user base anyway, all of it connecting through VPNs and proxies, which tells you both that it's very much blocked and that the workarounds work.
Telegram's built-in proxy support
Telegram lets you add MTProto or SOCKS5 proxies in settings, and public proxy lists circulate in Telegram channels. Some work from China on any given day. The problems: public proxies are shared by thousands of people, get found and blocked fast, and are run by strangers who see your connection metadata. And a proxy fixes Telegram only; Gmail, Maps, and Instagram stay dead. It's a reasonable emergency fallback, not the plan.
What still works without a VPN
- iMessage and FaceTime, because Apple operates in China.
- WeChat, which is what everyone local uses and what your hotel and guide will expect.
- SMS and regular calls over roaming, at your carrier's rates.
How to make Telegram work: two real options
Option 1: a VPN, installed before you fly. Through a working VPN, Telegram behaves normally: chats, channels, calls, and file downloads. The requirement is a VPN that actually connects from inside China, and shared commercial servers on blocklisted IP ranges increasingly don't.
