Does Google Play work in China?
No. The Play Store is blocked in mainland China along with the rest of Google. On an Android phone from abroad, apps won't install or update, purchases fail, and, less obviously, push notifications for many Western apps stop arriving, because they're delivered through Google's blocked infrastructure. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN set up before you arrive, and this page matters more for you than for any iPhone owner.
What actually happens when you try
The Play Store opens to an endless spinner or a "check your connection" error. Nothing installs, nothing updates. The deeper problem is Firebase Cloud Messaging, the Google service most Western Android apps use to deliver notifications: with it unreachable, your airline app, banking app, and messenger go silent, arriving in a burst only when the app is opened. iPhones are unaffected, because Apple's push service operates in China. This is the single biggest phone-platform difference for a China trip.
And the trap has teeth: if your VPN app isn't installed before you land, you cannot get it afterwards. The Play Store is blocked, VPN websites are blocked, and Chinese app stores carry no VPNs. There is no talking your way out of this one from a hotel room.
What to do before you fly, on Android
- Install and test your VPN at home. Not the night before in the airport; at home, where a failed install can be fixed.
- Update every app you'll need, plus Android system updates, since none of it updates in China without the VPN.
- Install WeChat, Alipay, and Didi from Play now, since you can't get them from Play later. They work in China without a VPN once installed.
- Grab the APK of anything critical from its official site as a fallback. Sideloading is Android's escape hatch; use it for reputable sources only.
How to make Android behave: the VPN
With a working VPN, the whole Google layer comes back at once: Play, updates, push notifications, Maps, sync.
