Does Google work in China?
No. Google Search has been completely blocked in mainland China since 2014, and the block covers nearly every Google service: Drive, Docs, Photos, Translate, Calendar sync, and Gmail. Searches hang until they time out, on hotel wifi too. Everything works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN or a roaming eSIM, set up before you arrive.
What actually happens when you try
Safari sits on a blank page until it reports the server stopped responding. It isn't just google.com: the block covers Google's entire infrastructure, which is woven through the web in ways you only notice when it's gone. Fonts served from Google's CDN stall page loads. Sites that use reCAPTCHA for their login or checkout simply never finish loading the checkbox, so you can't sign in to services that have nothing to do with Google. Android phones bought outside China lose Play Store, push notifications, and RCS.
What to use instead, without a VPN
- Bing works in China. Results on the mainland version are filtered, but for "restaurant near me" and "how late does the metro run" it's fine. Switch Safari's default search engine to Bing before you fly if you'll be going VPN-less.
- Apple's stack works. Apple Maps, Siri, Spotlight, and Apple Translate all function in China. Download the Chinese offline language pack in Apple Translate before you board.
- Google Translate is blocked too — it pulled out of China in 2022 — so don't plan on it for menus. Apple Translate's camera mode covers the same job offline.
How to get Google back: two real options
Option 1: a VPN, installed before you fly. A working VPN restores the whole Google universe at once — Search, Drive, Photos backup, reCAPTCHA, Android services. Traveler's VPN does it with a private server and an IP address only you use, and routes Google through the tunnel while WeChat, Didi, and Chinese sites stay direct, which matters because Chinese sites get slow and suspicious when you visit them from a foreign IP.
