Does Wikipedia work in China?
No. Chinese-language Wikipedia has been blocked since 2015, and since April 2019 the block covers every language edition. Pages spin until they time out on any mainland network, including your hotel's wifi. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland you need a VPN or a roaming eSIM, set up before you arrive.
What actually happens when you try
The page loads forever and then Safari gives up. No block notice, no explanation. Chinese Wikipedia went dark in 2015, and in April 2019, just ahead of the Tiananmen anniversary, the block quietly expanded to all 300-plus language editions. It also covers the Wikipedia apps and sister projects like Wikivoyage, whose China guides are, ironically, unreachable from China.
You notice this block in a specific way as a traveler: standing in front of a temple wanting the two-paragraph history, or settling a dinner-table argument, and the reflex tap goes nowhere. And because Google is blocked too, the "just search it" fallback is gone as well.
What works without a VPN
- An offline copy. The free, open-source Kiwix app stores all of English Wikipedia without images in under 60 GB, or a curated top-articles version in a few gigabytes. Download it at home; it's the nerdiest and most reliable fix on this site.
- Apple's built-in lookups. Siri knowledge cards and Spotlight summaries work in China and quietly answer a surprising share of "what is this place" questions.
- Baidu Baike, the domestic equivalent, if you read Chinese and want the officially sanctioned version of events.
How to get Wikipedia back: two real options
Option 1: a VPN, installed before you fly. Wikipedia is light pages of text; any VPN that genuinely connects from inside China handles it easily. The connecting part is the hard bit, and it's where shared commercial servers on blocklisted ranges fail. Traveler's VPN gives you a private server with an IP address only you use, and routes Wikipedia, Google, and Instagram through the tunnel while WeChat, Didi, and local maps stay direct.
Option 2: a travel eSIM. Roaming data exits through Hong Kong or Singapore, so Wikipedia loads on cellular with no VPN, at about $4/day, and stops working the moment you join hotel wifi. Most travelers run both.
